Council on the Environment of NYC

Great Performances, the leading New York City catering and event company, is so passionate about local and organic produce that it has started growing its vegetables and fruit at its very own farm.

The farm is the result of a long search for suitable land that led to 60 acres in Kinderhook, in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley. In an industry first, starting this summer, the farm’s first crop— 27 varieties from arugula to watermelon--will end up on the table of posh parties and casual events within 24 hours of being picked.

Great Performances will use the bounty in its preparation of meals for all its catered events and venues, including on the menus at the seven cafes it operates, and for a planned line of artisanal organic products under the Great Performances label.

Farmer Bob

The son of a salesman, Bob Walker did not hear the call of the land until he was 30, when he read a book that changed his life - Secrets of the Soil: New Solutions for Restoring our Planet A chronicle of food production and agricultural techniques, this book inspired him to travel throughout Europe to learn about biodynamic farming techniques and, ultimately, led to a dramatic career change.

Walker moved to the Hudson Valley in 1992 to become farm manager for the Triform Camphill Agricultural Community in Hudson, NY and has been farming in the region ever since, continuing to develop his knowledge of and commitment to sustainable agriculture.
By 1997, Walker was again in business for himself with Terra Nova Earthworks, which developed and implemented farm based composting programs, a discipline about which he is passionate, frequently lecturing on the subject.

Bob Walker jumped at the opportunity to paint the blank canvas that Katchkie Farm represented, to create a working farm from scratch. “They say getting to know a piece of land takes time; that’s so true here. Getting ready for our first growing season was pretty much all consuming.  When I wasn’t physically working, I would spend hours pouring over seed and equipment catalogues; although I guess I’ve done that for years. I get obsessed,” he admits.

Where We Are
Historic Kinderhook in Columbia County, NY, has a rich agricultural tradition dating back to the 17th century when the Dutch first   settled the are.

Indeed, the name is derived from the Dutch “Kinderhoeck” or Children’s Corner, a nod to the Mohican children drawn to the riverbank by the site of Hendrik Hudson’s ship in 1609.  Kinderhoeck appeared on Dutch maps as early as 1614 and its Anglicized Kinderhook is now the oldest geographic name in the State of New York.

Today Kinderhook encompasses not only the charming Kinderhook Village with its well preserved collection of 18th and 19th century buildings (its Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places), but also the northwestern corner of Columbia County.
