2025 CSA Farm Update: Week 2
Hello everyone and welcome to week two of the Katchkie Farm CSA!
The heat is definitely on this week, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s early on. It’s a stark contrast to the cooler days of April, May, and most of June. We’re expecting heat-loving crops to really thrive, and this stretch of hot weather will also give us a chance to catch up on field work.
With all of the sogginess in the early part of the year, it seems that our brassica crops are struggling more than usual. This time of year, we’re typically swimming in kale and hakurei turnips, but this season they have been much more subdued. The particular field where I planted them this year is prone to slower drainage, and it seems like the crops are telling me to reevaluate my plan for future plantings. Even though building resilience into our garden is part of the long-term plan, nature will always show us where the limits are.
This past week, we also found out the deer who were eating our crops were living inside the deer fence! What more could a deer ask for, but a fenced vegetable garden that is safe from predators. While mowing, I spotted a young deer leaping out of the tall grass, and soon after, two adults heading straight for the garden. I gathered together the farm crew and opened up some of the gates with the hope of chasing them out.
A few hours later we finally had our chance and chased them out of the farm. The chase was a bit of an ordeal, as deer are very sensitive creatures with explosive speed and when they feel pursued, looking for an open door is not exactly in their mindset. After giving them lots of room and easing off the pressure, they eventually found their way out. Unfortunately, our chard will take a few more weeks to regrow and sadly our spring radicchios a distant memory.
Hopefully, the bag colors were clear to everyone last week. As a friendly reminder, half shares will be in blue reusable totes and full shares will be in the green reusable totes.
